Captain Duramite Biography

Birth name: Dara Jones

Dara’s parents worked at the local power plant.  Her father was a maintenance manager and her mother worked in the office.  One day, they were having lunch together outside when an enormous explosion occurred in the substation.  Dara’s mother, who was 7 months pregnant with Dara, was taken to the emergency room where she fell into a deep coma.  Dara’s father was fatally impaled by a piece of porcelain that burst off a bushing and pronounced dead at the scene.  The explosion was ruled as negligence that could have been avoided.  It was the result of a bushing that had breaks on its porcelain skirt, resulting a flashover and subsequent explosion. 

After a few weeks in a coma, Dara’s mother awoke and was told what had happened.  She was heartbroken, but was determined to get well and make a life for her and her unborn daughter.  A few short weeks later, the widowed Mrs Jones went into labor.  She gave birth to a happy, healthy, beautiful little girl, which she named Dara. 

As Dara grew, it was apparent that she was special.  With an early fascination with science, she began experimenting in her mothers kitchen and came up with a number of solutions to fix and clean a variety of things.

As an adult, Dara studied chemical engineering in college.  She loved problem solving and creating formulas for various applications.  For her senior project she decided to study high voltage bushings like the one that exploded, killing her father.  She knew that if the porcelain skirt would have been in tact, the flash over that caused the explosion would not have occurred.

After many months of research and trial and error, she finally came up with a polymer that maintained the strength and structural integrity of porcelain that could be applied to bushings and insulators to repair breaks, cracks and chips.  She called the product “Duramite™” to represent the polymers “durability” and “mighty strength”.  She won many awards for her invention as well as the title “Captain Duramite™, Protector of Power Utilities Worldwide”.
